PART 9 – My Children Told Me, ” We Have Our Own Lives.” So I Stopped Calling Them and Changed My Will

The voice outside the door came again.

“Maggie.”

My fingers tightened around the paper in my hand.

I knew that voice.

Thomas knew it too.

Jennifer was crying silently.

Lisa stared at me from the hospital bed, her eyes wide with fear.

I looked at Thomas.

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer.

The shadow beneath the door moved.

Then the voice came again.

“Maggie, please open the door.”

My heart pounded.

It was Daniel.

I looked at the message on my phone.

Maggie, get out of the hospital now.

Because the man who killed Richard just walked into Lisa’s room.

I looked back at the door.

Daniel was standing on the other side.

But if Daniel wasn’t the killer, why had he warned me?

And why was he here?

I whispered, “How did you know?”

Daniel answered through the door.

“Because I saw him come in.”

Thomas moved closer.

“Who?”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Robert Brennan.”

Thomas froze.

His father’s name.

Jennifer covered her mouth.

Lisa whispered, “No.”

I stared at the door.

“Daniel, step away.”

There was silence.

Then Daniel said, “Maggie, you need to trust me.”

I almost laughed.

“That’s becoming difficult.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me for eight years.”

“I know.”

“You hid Rachel.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Richard went to Room 417.”

“Yes.”

“And now you’re telling me Robert Brennan killed my husband.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me why I shouldn’t believe you’re protecting yourself.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because Robert isn’t alone.”

I looked at Thomas.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel answered:

“Michael is with him.”

My heart stopped.

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

I stepped toward the door.

Thomas grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.”

I turned toward him.

“My son is out there.”

“And that’s exactly why you need to think.”

“What if Michael is in danger?”

“What if he’s part of this?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because that was the question I had been avoiding for days.

Was Michael being manipulated?

Or had he been manipulating me?

I looked at Jennifer.

She was shaking.

“Jennifer.”

She looked at me.

“Do you know where Michael is?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“I don’t.”

“You were just with him.”

“Yes.”

“Then why isn’t he here?”

“I don’t know.”

Her voice broke.

“He told me to stay away from him.”

I looked toward the door.

Daniel spoke again.

“Maggie, listen carefully.”

I waited.

“Robert knows about the trust.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“Because he helped create the original structure.”

Thomas stared at the floor.

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“Richard didn’t build the trust alone.”

I turned toward Thomas.

“Who helped him?”

Daniel answered through the door.

“Robert.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

I whispered, “Then why did Richard trust him?”

“He didn’t.”

I felt a chill.

“What?”

“Richard suspected Robert was involved with Ethan.”

“Then why use him?”

“Because Richard needed to know how deep the operation went.”

Thomas suddenly spoke.

“My father wasn’t the architect.”

Daniel went quiet.

Thomas looked at me.

“He was investigating them too.”

“Then why did Jennifer say he was there when Richard died?”

“Because he was.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked at the door.

“Daniel, what happened in Room 417?”

His voice became almost a whisper.

“Richard discovered who was moving the money.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because I wasn’t there when he found out.”

“But you were there that night.”

“Yes.”

“What did you see?”

A long pause.

Then:

“I saw Robert leave the room.”

“And Richard?”

“Alive.”

I felt a strange relief.

“Then what happened?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel!”

“I left.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard told me to.”

“Where did you go?”

“I went back to your house.”

I stared at the door.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I expect you to believe Richard.”

I looked at the note in my hand.

I know who killed me.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My husband had known.

But there was something else.

The sentence below it.

And Maggie, the person responsible is not Daniel.

I read it again.

Then I noticed something.

There was a faint mark beneath the final line.

A small number.

I stared at it.

“Thomas.”

He looked over.

“What?”

“Room 417.”

He nodded.

“It’s connected.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“It’s not just a room.”

I looked at the paper.

“It’s a clue.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“How?”

“I don’t know yet.”

The door handle moved again.

Daniel whispered:

“Maggie, you have thirty seconds.”

“For what?”

“To leave.”

I looked at Lisa.

She was still weak.

“I’m not leaving my daughter.”

“You have to.”

“Why?”

“Because the hospital’s security system has been compromised.”

Thomas’s face tightened.

“What?”

“Someone has disabled the cameras on this floor.”

I looked toward the hallway.

The corridor suddenly seemed much darker.

Then the lights flickered.

Lisa grabbed my hand.

“Mom.”

“I know.”

A loud crash came from somewhere down the hall.

Then footsteps.

Running.

Thomas looked at the door.

“We’re leaving.”

I nodded.

He helped Lisa out of bed.

Jennifer moved toward her sister.

“I’ve got her.”

Lisa leaned against Jennifer.

For one second, the two sisters looked at each other.

Whatever had happened between them disappeared.

They were simply sisters.

Scared.

Together.

We moved toward the small side door connected to the room.

Thomas opened it.

A service corridor stretched behind the wall.

“Where does this go?” I whispered.

“Stairs.”

We stepped through.

Behind us, someone slammed against the main door.

Lisa cried out.

We ran.

My legs were weaker than they had ever been, but fear gave me strength.

We reached the stairwell.

Thomas pushed the door open.

We started down.

One floor.

Then another.

Behind us, the door opened.

Someone was following.

“Keep moving,” Thomas whispered.

We reached the ground floor.

A security guard shouted.

“Stop!”

Thomas raised his hands.

“She’s the patient’s mother.”

The guard looked at Lisa.

Then at me.

“Where are you going?”

“Out.”

He shook his head.

“You can’t leave through the main entrance.”

“Why?”

“Police have sealed the front.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

He looked nervous.

“There was an incident.”

“What incident?”

He glanced behind us.

“Someone assaulted a nurse.”

I looked at Thomas.

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

Then the elevator doors opened.

A man stepped out.

Robert Brennan.

I had never met him.

But I knew immediately.

Thomas’s father.

He was older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

Cold eyes.

He looked at me.

Then at Thomas.

Then at Lisa.

Nobody moved.

Robert smiled.

“Margaret.”

My heart pounded.

“How do you know me?”

He looked at Thomas.

“Your husband talked about you constantly.”

I felt sick.

“You knew Richard.”

“Very well.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“Dad.”

Robert’s expression hardened.

“Thomas.”

“You need to leave.”

Robert smiled.

“You still think you understand what happened.”

“I know enough.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“You know what Richard wanted you to believe.”

I stared at him.

“Did you kill my husband?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he asked:

“Did Daniel tell you that?”

“Yes.”

Robert smiled.

“Then Daniel is finally becoming honest.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“Stay away from her.”

Robert’s eyes narrowed.

“You’ve spent eight years pretending to be her protector.”

Thomas froze.

“What does that mean?”

Robert looked at me.

“Ask your attorney where he was the night Richard died.”

“I already know.”

“Do you?”

I turned toward Thomas.

He said nothing.

Robert continued.

“Your husband didn’t trust Daniel.”

I felt a chill.

“Then who did he trust?”

Robert smiled.

“Me.”

Thomas shook his head.

“That’s a lie.”

Robert ignored him.

“Richard knew Ethan was stealing from his company.”

“I know.”

“He knew Michael and Jennifer had become involved.”

“I know.”

“He knew Rachel was in danger.”

“I know.”

Robert’s expression changed.

“But you don’t know why.”

“Tell me.”

He looked toward Lisa.

“Because Rachel had evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“Names.”

“Whose names?”

“Everyone involved.”

I stepped closer.

“Where is it?”

Robert smiled.

“That’s what everyone has been looking for.”

Thomas grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.”

I pulled away.

“Let him speak.”

Robert looked pleased.

“You’re finally asking the right questions.”

I stared at him.

“Did Richard die because of those names?”

“Yes.”

“Did you kill him?”

“No.”

I almost laughed.

“Then who did?”

Robert’s eyes moved to Thomas.

“Your son.”

My entire body went cold.

Thomas whispered:

“No.”

Robert continued.

“Not Michael.”

He looked at me.

“Thomas.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.”

Thomas stepped backward.

“Dad, stop.”

“You were there.”

Thomas shook his head.

“I wasn’t.”

“You were.”

“Not when he died.”

Robert looked at me.

“Your attorney was in Room 417.”

I turned to Thomas.

“Is that true?”

Thomas’s face was wet with tears.

“Yes.”

My heart broke.

“You lied.”

“I was there.”

“Why?”

“I was trying to stop Richard.”

“Stop him from what?”

“Going to the police.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because I knew my father was involved.”

Robert laughed.

“Not involved.”

He corrected himself.

“Deeply involved.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You were laundering money.”

Robert’s smile disappeared.

“So were you.”

“No.”

“You signed the documents.”

“Because you threatened me.”

I stared at Thomas.

“What documents?”

He looked at me.

“The guardianship documents.”

My stomach dropped.

“You?”

“I didn’t create them.”

“But you signed something.”

“No.”

Robert laughed.

“Tell her the truth.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I was working undercover.”

Silence.

I couldn’t understand.

“Working for whom?”

“Federal investigators.”

My mouth fell open.

Thomas continued.

“Richard had contacted them.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because your life was at risk.”

“Everyone says that!”

My voice echoed through the corridor.

“Everyone has an excuse for lying to me!”

Robert looked almost amused.

Then he said:

“That’s because Richard built his entire plan around one assumption.”

“What assumption?”

“That you would never stop loving your children.”

I stared at him.

He continued.

“He was wrong.”

I felt something change inside me.

Not anger.

Something stronger.

Determination.

“I did stop trusting them.”

Robert nodded.

“But that’s not the same thing.”

He stepped closer.

“You still love them.”

“Yes.”

“And that is what will destroy you.”

I looked him directly in the eye.

“No.”

My voice was steady.

“That is what makes me stronger.”

For the first time, his expression changed.

Then a gunshot echoed somewhere above us.

Lisa screamed.

Everyone froze.

Another shot.

Then shouting.

Security guards ran toward the stairwell.

Robert turned.

Thomas grabbed my shoulder.

“Move!”

We rushed toward an emergency exit.

Behind us, Robert disappeared into the crowd.

“Where’s Jennifer?” Lisa shouted.

I stopped.

She wasn’t with us.

I looked back.

Jennifer was gone.

“Jennifer!”

No answer.

I turned toward Thomas.

“Find her.”

“We can’t.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“I know.”

“Then find her!”

Thomas looked toward the corridor.

“I saw her speaking to Robert.”

My blood ran cold.

“When?”

“Before we came down.”

“You didn’t tell me?”

“I thought she was safe.”

I stared at him.

“You thought?”

His face collapsed.

“I was wrong.”

We ran back.

Jennifer was nowhere.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Jennifer’s voice whispered:

“Mom.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean?”

“I woke up in a room.”

My heart stopped.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t see.”

“Jennifer, listen to me.”

“Mom, there’s something written on the wall.”

“What?”

She started crying.

“It says…”

“What does it say?”

Her voice trembled.

“Room 417.”

My blood froze.

I looked at Thomas.

He looked terrified.

Jennifer whispered:

“And Mom…”

“What?”

“There’s someone else in here.”

“Who?”

She started screaming.

The call filled with static.

Then another voice came through.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Hello, Maggie.”

I couldn’t breathe.

It was Richard.

Not a recording.

Not a memory.

A living man’s voice.

Then he said:

“It’s time you learned why everyone thought I was dead.”
