“Because you were too busy with that little online store you pretend is a business!” Celina spat. “Luke works himself to the bone supporting you!”
Something inside me hardened.
“My online store pays Brucie’s private preschool tuition, the HOA fees for our house, and almost every utility bill we have,” I said firmly.
Luke gave a dry, dismissive laugh. “Don’t make a scene, Clover.”
Celina suddenly grabbed my arm, her manicured nails digging into my skin, and slapped me across the face in front of the hospital staff.
“You ungrateful girl!” she screamed. “My son gave you a house, a car, and a lifestyle you could never afford by yourself!”
Luke didn’t move. He didn’t defend me. He barely even reacted.
Instead, he simply held the settlement agreement toward me again.
“Sign it, Clover. If you turn this into a criminal investigation, divorce papers will be waiting for you tomorrow morning. And my attorneys will make sure you leave with nothing.”
I touched my split lip and tasted blood. Then I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone.
“The private maternity clinic where Brucie was born cost $8,500,” I said as I opened my financial records. “I paid that bill from my own account.”
I swiped to another statement.
“The down payment for the SUV came from a $25,000 transfer my father sent directly.”
Then I opened a third record.
“And for the last eleven months, the monthly money you’ve transferred for the household hasn’t even covered half of our actual expenses.”
The confidence disappeared from Luke’s face.
I slipped my phone back into my purse. “I’m not signing anything.”
I pressed the elevator button.
“I’m going to the morgue. And I want an autopsy, a complete forensic examination of the SUV, and every security-camera recording from that parking lot.”
Luke grabbed my wrist, squeezing hard enough to hurt. “You have no idea what you’re doing.”
I looked down at his fingers around my wrist before meeting his eyes. “I think you’re the one who has no idea what you just did.”
The elevator chimed and the doors opened.
As I stepped inside and began descending toward the morgue, I had no idea that the body waiting for me below would shatter every single lie my husband had ever built…
PART 2
The forensic pathologist slowly lowered the white sheet.
I held my breath, preparing myself for the most horrifying moment of my life.
Then I suddenly stepped backward.
“That’s not my daughter.”
Luke, who had followed me downstairs with his legal counsel, immediately went rigid.
A small boy lay on the stainless-steel examination table. He looked about five years old, and he was wearing Brucie’s yellow duck raincoat.
“Who is this?” I whispered.
Before anyone could respond, hurried footsteps echoed through the concrete corridor.
Camellia suddenly rushed into the room, getting past security. The instant she saw the body on the table, a piercing scream ripped from her throat.
“Bruno!”
She collapsed onto her knees, striking the cold tile with both hands, weeping hysterically…
The entire morgue went deathly silent.
I turned slowly, looking from the weeping woman on the floor to my husband standing by the door.
One Comment on “My husband offered me $800,000 to stay silent after his secretary left our 4-year-old daughter trapped inside a scorching SUV. “Take the money and don’t call the police,” he warned.”
